The film tells the story of a couple getting lost in the city, meeting strange people. So not much of a plot  - but this was not what we wanted anyway. The film is about the mood of the people in relation to the places, about little wounds, weirdnesses and desires. Trying to avoid everything bigger than life.

Image Molecules was an attempt to apply minimalistic formal concepts to a narrative story. I wrote my theoretical diploma paper about this topic and we (thilo and me) planned to use a similar formal concept in our diploma film. The main references to movies (that i used in the theoretical paper) where to "Songs From The Second Floor" by Roy Andersson and "What Time Is It There?" by Tsai Ming-Liang. The common denominator in "Molecules" and later in our diploma film "Atome" is the fixed camera and the long shots, where the idea always is to show one scene in one shot.

The most important concepts that we tried to check in this preparation movie was the ability to edit "within" the image, without using a physical cut. The idea was, to lead to attention of the audience to the specific elements that are important in the progress of the story - although revealing everything right from the beginning. The other main concept was to find visually appealing locations which underline the desired psychological effect of the scene and give the audience not only the free decision of where to look but also tempt them to let there attention wander around the image.
